Accra: The Ministry of Finance has released GHS1.677 billion to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for 2026, representing 85 percent of the ministry's approved budget for Goods and Services and Capital Expenditure (CAPEX). This announcement was made by Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem during the launch of Ghana's AgriConnect Compact.
According to Ghana Web, this funding allocation challenges claims that the Ministry of Finance has not provided adequate financial support to key ministries and state bodies. During the event, Nyarko Ampem emphasized that the Mahama administration is aligning its agricultural transformation agenda with substantial financial backing and targeted investments.
Nyarko Ampem highlighted the government's vision for agriculture, which goes beyond merely increasing production. The aim is to transform the entire agricultural value chain, enhance food security, create employment opportunities, and strengthen economic growth. As part of this agenda, the Ministry of Finance has already released significant resources to fund key interventions across the sector.
'I am pleased to confirm that we have released GHS1.677 billion, representing 85 percent of the approved 2026 Budget for Goods and Services and Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) for the Ministry of Food and Agriculture,' Nyarko Ampem stated. He further provided a detailed breakdown of the financial releases:
GHS581.4 million has been allocated for establishing 50 Farmer Service Centres to support mechanisation and boost productivity. GHS110 million is designated for irrigation infrastructure projects to enable year-round farming and reduce reliance on rainfall. GHS515.3 million will be used for supplying fertilisers and certified seeds to enhance crop yields and food production. The Poultry Farm-to-Table Project (Nkoko Nkitinkiti) will receive GHS244.9 million to support the poultry industry's growth. Lastly, GHS200 million has been allocated to the National Food Buffer Stock Company to address challenges in storage, distribution, and trading of agricultural produce.
