Accra: Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has begun engagements with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry as part of efforts to move Ghana from economic stabilisation to long-term transformation. This follows President John Dramani Mahama's announcement that the 'New Economy' programme will involve a US$10 billion investment in key sectors of the economy. However, the full details of the anticipated programme are expected to be presented in the 2027 Budget in November.
According to Ghana Web, the Finance Minister emphasized that the government's focus must now shift from stabilising the economy to creating an economy that delivers jobs, supports businesses, and provides better opportunities for Ghanaians. In a post on his X page sighted by GhanaWeb Business, Dr Ato Forson stated that he had begun discussions with the Trade Ministry on the government's 'New Economy' agenda. "Earlier today, I began engagements with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry on our New Economy agenda!" he stated.
He further elaborated that the economic stabilisation achieved by Ghana should not be seen as the final goal but rather as the foundation for the next stage of development. "Stabilisation was never the destination. It was the price of entry. Ghana has paid that price," he said. Dr Ato Forson stressed that the next phase must focus on economic transformation that can have a direct impact on the lives of Ghanaians. "What comes next is the work that changes lives at scale, the work of transformation," he added.
Other officials present at the meeting included Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and other officials from the Trade and Finance Ministries.
