Felix Kwakye Ofosu Defends Electoral Commission Appointments Amid Criticism

Baku:Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has defended President John Dramani Mahama's decision to appoint Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as new Deputy Chairpersons of Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC).

According to Ghana Web, Kwakye Ofosu addressed criticisms from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) concerning the political affiliations of the appointees, particularly Afi Agbenyo, who is perceived as a member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). He argued that previous administrations also appointed individuals with party ties to the EC and other public bodies.

The minister emphasized that addressing perceived imbalances in state institutions is a part of resetting the country, which includes bodies managing elections. He pointed out concerns about the current composition of the EC, mentioning that several members are affiliated with the NPP, which raises questions about balance.

Kwakye Ofosu defended the government's decision to alter the EC's composition, suggesting that adjusting the balance was necessary. He indicated that the appointment of an NDC member was intended to achieve this objective.
