Essikado-Ketan MP Provides Relief to Victims of Sekondi Harbour Fire

Sekondi:Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, the Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan Constituency in the Western Region, has extended aid to victims of the fire disaster that struck the Albert Bosomtwi-Sam Fishing Harbour on June 21.

According to Ghana News Agency, the relief items, donated to 65 victims, included essential supplies such as bags of rice and maize, boxes of cooking oil, mattresses, plastic buckets, and detergents. These were presented by Mr. Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, on behalf of the MP during the commemoration of the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The event was organized by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Sekondi.

Mr. Nelson highlighted the intention behind these donations, aiming to offer comfort and aid to those affected, aiding their recovery process. He noted that the Western Regional NADMO office recorded 207 disaster incidents in 2025, impacting over 4,347 people. This, he emphasized, underscores the urgent need for prioritizing disaster prevention and preparedness.

He further urged residents and institutions in the region to embrace disaster prevention as a collective responsibility. Practical steps such as maintaining clean drains, responsible waste disposal, avoiding construction on waterways and wetlands, complying with building regulations, and practicing fire and electrical safety were recommended.

Additionally, Mr. Nelson advised residents in flood-prone areas to heed official warnings, avoid crossing flooded paths, and relocate to safer areas when necessary. He also called on Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to enforce planning and building regulations, enhance sanitation and drainage, and manage unauthorized developments in high-risk zones.

Nana Appiah Mensah, representing the victims, expressed gratitude for the MP's support, acknowledging the relief items' significant impact in alleviating their losses from the fire incident at the harbour.
