Ashaiman: The Ashaiman Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in partnership with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), marked World Environment Day with a crucial sensitisation exercise at St Augustine's Catholic School. The focus was on urging the younger generation to take immediate and effective climate action.
According to Ghana News Agency, the event emphasized the theme 'Climate Action: Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future,' underscoring the urgent need for sustainable environmental practices to combat climate change. Ms Edith Ameyo, an Assistant Programme Officer at the EPA, Greater Accra East Region, Tema, addressed the pupils, highlighting the pressing reality of the climate crisis. She noted that negative actions impacting the climate would inevitably have repercussions, similar to a ball bouncing back when thrown against a wall. Ms Ameyo pointed to the rising temperatures, increased flooding, and worsening droughts in the Northern regions as evidence of the urgency for change.
Ms Ameyo encouraged the formation of 'Green Clubs' within schools to engage students in practical environmental projects such as tree planting, waste segregation, and promoting alternatives to single-use plastics and styrofoam, which are banned in the country. She urged students to adopt these practices at home, educating their families on waste reduction and resource conservation, such as turning off taps when not in use. She emphasized the importance of treating the environment as a legacy to be preserved for future generations.
Ms Salvata Mawulom Koku, the Ashaiman Municipal NCCE Director, also addressed the students, advocating for better waste management practices. She highlighted the role of the NCCE in empowering the youth to become environmental stewards. Ms Koku stressed the non-negotiable nature of the environment and called for collective action to protect the Earth for future generations.
