Upper West Region Allocated GHS101.9 Million for Development Projects: Minister

Accra: The Upper West Region has received GHS101,902,000 from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to support various development projects across its districts and municipalities. The amount, secured by the end of the second quarter, constitutes about 25 percent of the region's expected annual allocation. According to Ghana News Agency, the funds have been directed towards development initiatives in the region's 11 districts, encompassing sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Projects include the construction of Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, classroom blocks, and boreholes. Additionally, infrastructure such as nurses' and teachers' quarters, police posts, market sheds, and road networks have been prioritized under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP). The region has also benefited from investments by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), with approximately 110 projects including a library complex and halls of residence at the Universi ty for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS). Further educational developments feature a new Senior High School at Issa, a TVET center at Ga, and new facilities at Kanton Senior High School. The Minister emphasized the government's commitment to completing abandoned projects while addressing community needs through new infrastructure. During President John Dramani Mahama's inspection of the 24-Hour Economy Market project at Poyentanga, Wa West District Chief Executive, Mr. Richard Wulo, expressed gratitude for the allocated funds, noting their impact on local development. President Mahama highlighted the importance of decentralization in accelerating development, allowing district assemblies to address community-specific needs. He announced that 80 percent of the DACF would be directly allocated to district assemblies for project implementation. Additionally, Mahama praised the Finance Ministry for ensuring timely funding releases and encouraged proper use of the allocations. In support of ec onomic development, President Mahama commended the ongoing work on the 24-Hour Economy Market and its potential to boost trade by attracting businesses from neighboring Burkina Faso. He also inspected the proposed site for the Upper West Regional Airport in Nyagli, Wa Municipality, as part of broader regional development plans.
