Kumasi: Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has inspected several ongoing projects in the Ashanti Region aimed at enhancing the quality and safety of power supply in Kumasi. These initiatives are part of efforts by the Energy Ministry and the Electricity Company of Ghana to stabilize power supply in the region, especially as demand continues to rise in the 'garden city.'
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Jinapor was joined by the Ashanti Regional Minister, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Limited, the CEO of GRIDCo, journalists, and other dignitaries during his visit. The team toured the Aska and Cenit Plants at Anwomaso, the Boadi to Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply sub-transmission lines, the Kumasi Substation of GRIDCo, and the Ridge BSP. They noted that the Aska plant, which is currently generating around 130 megawatts (MW) of power, is undergoing its second phase of system upgrades.
Additionally, the CENIT Plant, a new generator facility, is under construction to produce 110MW of power upon completion, which is expected by May/June 2026. This project falls under the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) initiative and aims to bolster the region's power supply. Furthermore, ECG has replaced an older 20/26 MegaVolt-Ampere (MVA) transformer with a new 30/39 MVA transformer at the Ridge Substation in Kumasi to meet the city's growing power demand. The displaced transformer has been relocated to Offinso to support that area.
Dr. Jinapor emphasized the government's commitment to stabilizing power supply in Kumasi, crucial for the region's economic activities. To support the major system upgrades, ECG is installing approximately 300 transformers across communities, with plans to install an additional 400 transformers in a second phase. In July, GRIDCo is set to embark on a significant upgrade of its transmission lines to enhance system reliability nationwide.
The Minister also highlighted efforts to improve power supply in the Volta Region, with plans to construct a transmission line from Asiekpe to Ho to provide a dedicated feeder for towns along the Eastern Corridor. Additionally, about 18 transformers will be installed in the Mpoho areas of the Western Region by next week to further enhance power supply.
Dr. Jinapor urged the public to remain patient during these infrastructure upgrades, acknowledging that some plants or gadgets may need temporary shutdowns to facilitate the work. He expressed optimism that by the end of the third quarter of 2026, the country would enjoy a stable and resilient power supply. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, expressed gratitude to the Energy Ministry for its dedication to improving the region's power supply.
