Ellen Ama Daaku Reveals Alleged Baby Theft Plot at Private Hospital

Accra: A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, Ellen Ama Daaku, has recounted an alleged baby theft plot she claims to have narrowly escaped while preparing to give birth at a private hospital about 14 years ago. Daaku shared her story during an appearance on Adom Dwaso Nsem, as monitored by GhanaWeb on June 14, 2026. She alleged that a nurse at the facility discreetly warned her to ensure a close relative remained by her side throughout the delivery process, two months before her due date.

According to Ghana Web, Daaku informed her mother about the warning, and her mother stayed with her throughout her time at the hospital. Daaku's suspicions were heightened after she safely delivered her baby and a nurse offered to take the newborn away for a bath. Her mother insisted on handling the baby's bath herself when they were discharged, avoiding potential risks.

Daaku later returned to the hospital to thank the nurse who had cautioned her. During their conversation, the nurse allegedly revealed that a substantial sum of money had been deposited in search of a healthy baby. Daaku claimed the deposit was 50,000 cedis for a baby whose mother had taken good care of herself.

She further noted that baby theft schemes are not limited to lower-tier health facilities but can occur across different levels of society, including high-end private hospitals. Daaku suggested that such activities might be more widespread than many people realize.

Her comments arise amidst the ongoing missing newborn case in Salaga. The Savannah Regional Health Directorate confirmed that a baby disappeared from the East Gonja District Hospital on June 10, 2026. The matter has been referred to the police, and health authorities have launched parallel investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The case has attracted national attention, with police questioning hospital staff and reports indicating that two midwives have been remanded in connection with the investigation.
