Ellembelle: Mr Joseph Armah Agyekum, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ellembelle, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for instituting the National Sanitation Day initiative, describing it as a timely intervention to improve environmental cleanliness and prevent flooding.
According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise has heightened public awareness of the need to keep the environment clean to reduce the risk of natural disasters, particularly floods. Mr Armah Agyekum made these remarks during a two-day national post-flood clean-up exercise at Nkroful in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.
The exercise, themed 'Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana After the Floods,' brought together staff of the District Assembly, market women, traders, and personnel from the security agencies. The clean-up exercise commenced at 1900 hours, aiming to tackle the sanitation challenges confronting the country and mitigate the impact of floods.
Mr Armah Agyekum emphasized that sustained environmental cleanliness would improve public health and enhance community resilience against sanitation-related diseases. He expressed hope that the initiative would become a monthly activity to complement the National Sanitation Day.
Additionally, he stated that the Assembly would strictly enforce its bye-laws to prevent developers from building on waterways, a major cause of perennial flooding in many communities. Mr Armah Agyekum also commended the staff of the District Assembly, market women, traders, and the security agencies for their massive turnout and commitment to the exercise.
