Afram plains: The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully restored electricity to the Afram Plains following a significant outage caused by damage to a marine cable. The incident led to a power cut throughout the Donkorkrom District after the fault was discovered approximately 400 metres into the River Afram.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, the General Manager for External Communications at ECG, explained that the Eastern Regional maintenance team promptly mobilized to assess the situation. Initial checks confirmed a major fault on the marine cable, which impeded power transmission across the river. In response, a specialized Cable Test Van was dispatched from Accra to pinpoint the exact location of the failure.
Operations encountered a brief setback when the Test Van got stuck in a swampy section during the fault-tracing process on Wednesday. The timely intervention of Moses Tangbe, the District Chief Executive for Afram Plains South, was instrumental in resolving this challenge, as he ensured the safe extraction of the vehicle.
Despite the challenging terrain, ECG engineers, aided by local residents, adopted an innovative recovery strategy. Two boats and community divers were deployed to lift sections of the submerged cable from the river, allowing the team to identify and repair the damaged portion. In the absence of specialized marine cable joints, the team improvised with standard cable joints and constructed a temporary wharf to prevent the repaired section from contacting the river directly.
The coordinated effort and ingenuity of all involved helped prevent what could have been a prolonged outage across the Afram Plains. Dr. Ayiku praised the Eastern Regional Management and Maintenance Team, the Accra Sub-Transmission Cable Test Van Team, the Donkorkrom District team, and residents of Ekye Amanfrom and Adawso for their dedication and resilience.
The ECG extended its gratitude to all contributors to the restoration effort and issued an apology to its customers and the public for any inconvenience caused. The power restoration has brought much-needed relief to the affected communities.
