Accra: An Accra Circuit Court has levied a fine against a driver's mate after he was discovered concealing Indian hemp in food intended for an inmate at the Teshie Police Station. Derrick Ayiku, known by the alias 'Allegation,' entered a guilty plea to the charge of unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs.
According to Ghana News Agency, the court convicted Ayiku based on his own admission, imposing a fine of GHC2,400. Should Ayiku fail to pay the fine, he faces a default sentence of three months in prison. Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, who led the prosecution, informed the court that the complainant in the case was a Police Officer stationed at Teshie in Accra.
The incident occurred on April 11, 2026, around 2000 hours, when Ayiku arrived at the Teshie Police Station under the guise of delivering food to an inmate on remand. The complainant, acting as the Station NCO, became suspicious of Ayiku's demeanor and decided to inspect the food package thoroughly.
The inspection uncovered five wraps of Indian hemp hidden within the meal. As a result, Ayiku was promptly arrested and held in custody. During subsequent investigations, Ayiku confessed to the police that a person named Gideon Amartey had directed him to purchase the Indian hemp. Ayiku admitted to hiding the narcotic substance in the food but did not reveal the source of the drugs.
The purported narcotic substance is yet to be sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory for further analysis, as investigations are still ongoing.
