Vienna: Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has engaged with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, as Ghana seeks to expand the use of nuclear science and technology for national development. The engagement comes as Ghana continues to explore the use of nuclear science in areas including healthcare, agriculture, energy, food, and water security.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Zanetor stated in a Facebook post that the meeting focused on Ghana's partnership with the IAEA and efforts to safely apply nuclear technology across various sectors. She described the meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi as productive, which took place on the sidelines of the 70th IAEA General Conference in Vienna.
She further mentioned that the discussions strengthened the relationship between Ghana and the IAEA, reaffirming their commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear science. Dr Zanetor emphasized the importance of international cooperation as Ghana develops its nuclear sector, particularly in strengthening the country's technical and regulatory capacity.
Dr Zanetor expressed her commitment to deepening Ghana's collaboration with the IAEA to ensure that the benefits of science and technology extend across key sectors of the economy. She looks forward to ensuring that science and technology translate into tangible improvements in the lives of Ghanaians.
The 70th IAEA General Conference is being held in Vienna from September 14 to 18, 2026, and brings together representatives of member states to discuss cooperation and developments in nuclear science and technology.
