Tamale: Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Vice President of the Republic, has demonstrated significant influence within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by securing a commanding lead in the party's Presidential Primaries held in the Northern Region. His performance underscored his stronghold in all 18 constituencies.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Bawumia's most notable victory was in the Tamale Central Constituency, where he garnered 792 votes. His closest competitor, Dr Bryan Acheampong, received only 93 votes. Other candidates, including Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, trailed with 28, four, and four votes, respectively.
The detailed results from some constituencies further highlight Dr Bawumia's overwhelming support. In the Mion Constituency, he secured 369 votes, overshadowing Dr Acheampong's 76 and Agyapong's 36. Similarly, in the Wulensi Constituency, Dr Bawumia achieved 353 votes, far exceeding the 110 votes of Dr Acheampong.
In the Nanton and Karaga constituencies, Dr Bawumia received 356 and 576 votes, respectively, with other candidates trailing significantly behind. In Kumbungu, his tally reached 332, with Dr Acheampong receiving 148 votes, and Agyapong 58.
The Tamale North and Tolon constituencies also saw Dr Bawumia leading with 412 and 585 votes, respectively. His dominance extended to Yendi and Gushegu constituencies, where he attained 484 and 584 votes. In Bimbilla, he achieved a remarkable 702 votes, cementing his influence in the region.
Dr Bawumia's leadership was further affirmed in the Saboba and Zabzugu constituencies, where he polled 345 and 335 votes, respectively. The Tatali/Sangule and Kpandai constituencies also echoed this trend, with Dr Bawumia receiving 290 and 613 votes.
These results collectively underscore Dr Bawumia's solidified position and widespread support within the Northern Region, highlighting his significant influence within the NPP.
