Kumasi: A devastating fire has ravaged spare parts shops and vehicles at the auto mechanics enclave at Sofoline, in the Kumasi Metropolis.
According to Ghana News Agency, twenty-seven vehicles and 22 metal containers stocked with vehicular spare parts were completely consumed by the fire, which occurred on Sunday, January 25, 2026, in the evening. Divisional Officer (DO) II Peter Addai, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), stated in an interview that fortunately, there were no casualties.
He mentioned that the GNFS received the distress call at 2000 hours, and the officers arrived at the scene at exactly 2014 hours. Upon arrival, the team noticed that the fire had engulfed the site and was spreading to other areas, prompting the first team to call for backup.
DO II Addai reported that by 2151 hours, both teams from Bremang and Twedie fire stations had brought the fire under control, and it was completely extinguished by 2246 hours. Although an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, preliminary findings suggest it was caused by burning refuse.
'The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but we had some few reports pointing to the fact that somebody was burning refuse and it started the fire,' said DO II Addai. He advised residents, traders, and citizens to exercise caution in dealing with fire, especially as the Harmattan season sets in.
He recommended that individuals burning refuse should have a bucket of water or sand nearby to ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the scene. This, he noted, would reduce fire outbreaks in the region and protect lives and properties from being lost to fire.
