Accra:David Asante Boateng, leader of the Let My Vote Count Alliance and former Managing Director of the Ghana Publishing Company Limited, has expressed concerns over the appointment of Emelia Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. He warns that this decision could undermine public confidence in the commission.
According to Ghana Web, Asante Boateng used a Facebook post to question the suitability of appointing someone with political ties to a critical position within the Electoral Commission. He argued that such appointments could compromise the commission's perceived neutrality, potentially affecting the integrity and credibility of future elections.
The appointment of Agbenyo, along with Dr. Joseph Kweku Asamoah as another Deputy Chairperson, has also been criticized by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). The party has raised concerns about Agbenyo's past involvement in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign activities and her role as a spokesperson for the party's manifesto committee on governance, questioning the compatibility of these activities with her new role.
Supporters of Agbenyo, however, highlight her professional background in gender advocacy and policy development, emphasizing her work with GIZ Ghana as a technical adviser and gender analyst. They argue that her participation in NDC’s election campaigns was aimed at promoting women's representation in leadership, rather than indicating formal membership in the governing party.
