Accra: Ghanaian sports journalist, Dan Kwaku Yeboah, has expressed strong criticism towards the appointment of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to lead the Black Stars in their quest for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Yeboah, speaking on Peace FM, questioned Queiroz's track record, despite his extensive experience in World Cup tournaments, highlighting that Queiroz's highest achievement was reaching the Round of 16.
According to Ghana Web, Yeboah compared Queiroz's record to that of former Black Stars coach Otto Addo, suggesting there is no significant difference between the two. He noted that in Queiroz's 20-year World Cup career, he has only managed to win 4 out of 16 matches, even with top players such as Cristiano Ronaldo during his tenure with Portugal. Yeboah urged for a move away from glorifying past successes, emphasizing that Queiroz's glory days might be behind him.
The journalist also raised concerns regarding Queiroz's ability to prepare the team effectively for the World Cup, considering his age and the limited time available. He compared Queiroz to Hugo Broos, the oldest coach at the World Cup, and questioned the decision to appoint someone who is the second-oldest man in this context. Yeboah suggested that Queiroz's signing might be influenced by a desire for a coach who can be easily controlled and expressed doubts about Queiroz's capability to lead the team to World Cup victory.
