Customs Division Enhances Security at Tema Port Amid Concerns

Tema:The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority has announced new measures to bolster security and surveillance at Ghana's ports, especially at Tema Port, following concerns over missing containers and illicit activities within the maritime trade sector.

According to Ghana Web, the measures involve tighter monitoring of container movements and enhanced surveillance at key operational points. The initiative comes after the arrest of customs officers linked to a cocaine interception incident, which raised concerns about missing container consignments and bribery.

Commissioner Aaron Kanor and the GRA leadership recently visited Tema Port to engage customs officers, port operators, and stakeholders. Commissioner Kanor emphasized the need for stricter controls to ensure containers entering and leaving the ports are properly accounted for, thus safeguarding government revenue and minimizing security breaches.

The increased scrutiny follows heightened concerns about security and accountability at the port, although no criminal liability has been established against any individuals or institutions. Officers acting within the law will continue to receive support, while those breaching procedures will face sanctions.

The GRA delegation's engagement with port personnel included inspections of container processing and examination areas to assess and improve security measures. The enhanced monitoring, supported by digital systems and surveillance infrastructure, aims to improve accountability in cargo clearance.

These measures are expected to restore confidence among freight forwarders, clearing agents, and maritime stakeholders, ensuring legitimate cargo is handled correctly while protecting government revenue. The Customs Division reaffirms its commitment to accountability, warning against activities that could compromise port security. As investigations continue, stakeholders will closely monitor the effectiveness of these enhanced surveillance measures.
