Accra:Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has affirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo remains the greatest symbol of Portuguese football, despite recent events that have cast doubt on his international future.
According to Ghana Web, Ronaldo 41 left the Portugal squad after coach Jorge Jesus decided not to start him in a Nations League match against Denmark, which Portugal won 4-2. With 146 goals in 234 matches for Portugal, Ronaldo holds record figures and has been instrumental in winning Euro 2016 and twice winning the Nations League.
Speaking at a news conference, Fernandes expressed his admiration for Ronaldo, stating that regardless of current events, he will always be a significant icon for Portugal's national team and the country. Fernandes emphasized the importance of unity within the team and urged the nation to avoid divisions or controversies surrounding Ronaldo's status.
After a successful campaign, Portugal currently leads Group A4 with nine points, having won all three of their matches. They are set to play Norway next, aiming to secure a spot in the quarter-finals with further matches against Denmark and Wales in November.
Coach Jorge Jesus, who succeeded Roberto Martinez, acknowledged Ronaldo as a "symbol of Portugal" and indicated that discussions about Ronaldo would follow the upcoming game against Norway. Jesus is focused on maintaining Portugal's strong performance in the Nations League, with Norway considered a top European team.
