Accra, May 25, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a waitress to a fine of 200 penalty units equivalent to GHS2,400.

00 for possessing three wraps of Indian hemp popularly known as “Wee”.

In default, Freda Ibrahim would serve six months imprisonment.

She denied possessing the narcotic and was found culpable after trial.

Police Chief Inspector Christine Bansah told the Court presided over by Mrs Susanna Eduful that the Police were the complainant in this case whilst Freda, the convict was a waitress and resided at Arts Centre.

She said on August 12, 2021 the convict went to the charge office to give food to her boyfriend Gyamfi George, who was in custody for the offence of robbery.

The Station Orderly took the food to examine before handing it over to the Gyamfi and in the process; she found three wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp wrapped in a black polythene bag, concealed in rice and beans popularly known as waakye, she said.

The Prosecution said Freda was immediately arrested by the Station Orderly of: Police Woman (PW) Constable Ofosu Yeboah Joyce and PW/Sergeant Rita Apau who was the Counter Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), both on duty at the Charge Office and immediately informed the Station Officer Inspector Rockson Dogbe.

Police Chief Inspector Bansah said during interrogation, Freda claimed a friend of the Gyamfi called James brought the food for her to be given to the Gyamfi in cells.

The Court heard that Freda failed to lead Police to arrest the said James and several attempts by Police for Freda and her boyfriend in cells to show the whereabouts of James failed.

Police said they also failed to assist Police with the contact number of the alleged James.

She said after investigation, Freda was charged with the offence and put before Court.

The exhibit was forwarded to the Police Forensic Laboratory for examination and tested positive.
