Competence and Skills Key to Reducing Maternal and Newborn Deaths, Says NARM-GH

Accra:Madam Leticia Atiah, the National President of the National Association of Registered Midwives Ghana (NARM-GH), emphasized that the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality depends significantly on the knowledge, skills, and competence of midwives.

According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Atiah highlighted the scientific and evidence-based nature of midwifery, stressing the importance of continuous learning and the exchange of best practices to improve the quality of care for mothers and newborns.

Speaking at the 2026 Midwifery Educators National Symposium in Accra, themed 'Scientific Session and Catch Them Young', Madam Atiah noted the symposium's role in enhancing participants' scientific expertise for safer deliveries and maternal survival. She mentioned that Ghana experienced a high number of maternal deaths in 2025, with postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) as the primary cause, and explained that the workshop aimed to train midwifery tutors on effectively managing PPH.

Madam Atiah called for greater investment in specialized midwifery training to equip midwives with the necessary competencies and practical skills for handling severe complications like PPH. The workshop also focused on introducing student midwives to NARM-GH before graduation to ensure a smooth transition into active membership, advocating for their welfare and professional development.
