Ashanti: Cocoa farmers in Ghana's Ashanti Region have issued a stern warning to the government, threatening a large-scale demonstration if any further reductions are made to cocoa prices. The farmers' concerns have been growing over the possible adjustments in the pricing structure, which they claim could severely impact their livelihoods.
According to Ghana Web, farmers in the Ahafo Ano South East District expressed their frustration over alleged government plans to reduce the price of cocoa. They have accused the government and industry stakeholders of consistently neglecting their needs, which has led to deteriorating conditions for those dependent on cocoa farming.
The warning from the farmers comes on the heels of suggestions from the Minority in Parliament that a price reduction might be imminent due to declining cocoa production in the area. The farmers have made it clear that they expect the government to maintain the current price of GHS2,485 per 64kg bag. They have cautioned that any additional cuts would compel them to take to the streets in protest.
One farmer articulated their plight, stating, "We are already struggling with the current reduction and cannot cope with another cut." The sentiment among the farmers is one of anxiety and determination as they prepare to stand up for their rights should the need arise.
