Accra: The Ghana Cocoa Farmers Association (GNACOFA) has made a formal appeal for a meeting with the Minister of Finance to address critical concerns impacting the cocoa sector. In a statement sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the association expressed the need for dialogue focusing on pricing issues and delays in farmers' payments.
According to Ghana Web, GNACOFA stressed that constructive engagement is the most effective method to resolve grievances and ensure sustainable solutions for Ghana's cocoa industry. The association acknowledged its history of opposing policies it sees as unfavorable but emphasized its members' commitment to supporting the government during challenging times. GNACOFA has requested a 30-minute meeting with the Finance Minister to discuss these urgent matters.
The association also pointed out the sharp decline in global cocoa prices, noting that prices dropped significantly from $6,050.30 per ton on January 1, 2026, to $4,165 by the end of the month. This decline has resulted in a $1,685 deficit, given the producer price is set at $5,850 per ton. With La C´te d'Ivoire reporting an excess harvest, further decreases in world prices are anticipated. GNACOFA has developed innovative solutions with input from sector experts and wishes to discuss these proposals with the Finance Minister and his team.
This call for dialogue follows protests at COCOBOD's head office over falling producer prices and delayed payments. However, GNACOFA questioned the authenticity of the protestors, clarifying that it does not endorse the demonstrations in their current form.
