Chieftaincy and land disputes threatening peace in Bono Region—NPC

Sunyani, The Bono Regional Secretariat of the National Peace Council (NPC) has expressed concern about chieftaincy and emerging land disputes, which are threatening the peace of the area.

To help deal with the situation, Alhaji Suallah Abdalah Quandah, the Regional Executive Secretary, has called for the strengthening and deepening of the collaboration between the NPC and Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after a closed-door meeting between the Council and REGSEC in Sunyani, he said eight out of the 18 traditional areas in the area were bedeviled with protracted chieftaincy disputes, which could degenerate into violent clashes, if not tackled.

He also cited land disputes between the Dormaa stool and the Regional Lands Commission, Drobo and Japekrom and Sunyani and Fiapre.

These disputes should be a source of worry to everybody and could not be allowed to continue.

Alhaji Quandah announced that the NPC had taken steps to resolve the Mo chieftaincy and Sampa land disputes.

He spoke of the need for all to accept to work together to protect the peace, noting that, there could not be progress in the absence of peace and social cohesion.

Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister, pledged stronger cooperation between the REGSEC and the NPC to bring down conflicts in the area.

She applauded the NPC for the significant role it has been playing to keep the region calm.
