Chief calls for capacity building for children in special homes

Accra, Nii Afotey Botwe II, Chief of Otinnor, Nungua Traditional Area, has called on government and private organisations to provide capacity building for children in special homes to give them a brighter future. He said most of the children in the orphanages had talents, which needed to be unearthed and enhanced for their personal and national development.

Nii Botwe said this on the sidelines of Vodafone Ghana Foundation’s educational training for children at the New Life Orphanage at Nungua in Accra.

The children were trained in brick laying, scratch programming, and painting among other arts.

The event formed part of the Foundation’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) training in commemoration of the International Education Week.

Nii Botwe, who is the Patron and Founder of the Orphanage, called on the Government to support the education of the children to the tertiary level.

He called for a “full” healthcare support for the children, saying though they were enrolled onto the National Health Insurance Scheme it could not cover all their medical expenses.

Reverend Amaris Nana Adjei Perbi, Head of the Foundation, said it reached out to the less privileged through the “Birthday with the Stars” programme.

The programme is organised for celebrities who have their birthdays in a particular month to serve as mentors and make an impact in the children’s lives.

Rev. Perbi said the Foundation would continue to engage the children in STEM training to develop their critical thinking skills and provide them with an Information and Communication Technology laboratory at the Home.

The personalities who celebrate their birthdays in January include Dr Louisa Ansong Satekla, a Dental Surgeon; Rebecca Donkor, CEO of Makeup Ghana, Stella Aba Seal, and Minister Abena Ruthy, both musicians, and Mr Louis Lamis, a filmmaker, who were present at the event to inspire the children.
