Chereponi: The Chereponi District Assembly has constructed three mechanised boreholes in the Wenchiki, Danado, and Hilltop communities to enhance access to safe and reliable water for local households. Additionally, the Assembly undertook the rehabilitation of the Wenchiki Dam, providing farmers and livestock owners with consistent water supplies for their agricultural and livestock activities.
According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative aims to address longstanding water challenges in the district and improve water availability for domestic, agricultural, and livestock use. The projects were executed by the Chereponi District Assembly with backing from the Coastal States Stability Mechanism (CSSM), a multi-donor initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.
Mr. Ibrahim Tia, the North East Regional Minister, acknowledged the efforts of the Chereponi District Assembly during the inauguration of the projects at Wenchiki. He highlighted that the intervention would bring significant relief to the beneficiary communities and encouraged them to maintain the facilities to ensure sustainability. The ceremony was attended by representatives of CSSM, traditional authorities, community leaders, members of the Water Management Committees, and other stakeholders.
Mr. Amadu Kofi Sheini, Chereponi District Chief Executive, reiterated the Assembly's commitment to enhancing access to essential services in line with its development priorities. He noted the fundamental role of water in the health, livelihoods, and well-being of the people, emphasizing that the investment would support peaceful coexistence and community development.
He further explained that residents had faced challenges accessing reliable water sources, especially during the dry season. He expressed optimism that the new facilities would improve water security, reduce barriers to equitable access, and bolster local economic activities.
Alhaji Abubakari Awuffour, Paramount Chief of Wenchiki, voiced his appreciation for the intervention, acknowledging the community's long-standing struggles with inadequate water supply. He assured the Assembly and its partners that the community would ensure the responsible use and maintenance of both the rehabilitated dam and the boreholes.
The Coastal States Stability Mechanism, implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), collaborates with governments and communities to reinforce a locally accepted state presence in areas prone to instability. Through a flexible small-grants mechanism, CSSM supports initiatives aimed at strengthening civilian security, improving access to basic services, and enhancing social and economic conditions.
