Accra: The value of cheques used in Ghana saw an increase in June 2026, despite a decline in the number of cheques issued by individuals and businesses compared to the previous year.
According to Ghana Web, cheques worth GHS35.7 billion were cleared in June 2026, marking an 8.5 per cent rise from the GHS32.9 billion recorded in June 2025. However, the number of cheques processed decreased from 414,000 to 406,000 within the same timeframe, indicating that fewer cheques were used, yet the amounts involved were significantly higher.
The data suggests that businesses, government institutions, and other organisations are increasingly using cheques for large-value payments, while many individuals have transitioned to digital payment options like mobile money and bank transfers. Mobile money remains the preferred method for everyday transactions, with 954 million transactions totaling GHS492.9 billion recorded in June alone.
Despite the decline in cheque usage, this trend does not indicate the disappearance of cheques. Instead, they are being leveraged for larger transactions that require formal records and established banking procedures. The value of cheques cleared also rose from GHS33.8 billion in May 2026 to GHS35.7 billion in June 2026, pointing to a recovery in cheque usage.
The data underscores that while digital payments continue to dominate everyday transactions, cheques remain a crucial component for significant business and institutional payments.
