Accra:The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has argued before the High Court that Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi and the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, poses a significant flight risk and should not be granted bail while appealing a 20-year jail sentence.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Srem-Sai presented his case against Wontumi's bail application, emphasizing that the prisoner is currently facing trials in two additional criminal courts, each carrying potential substantial sentences. This situation, he argued, provides Wontumi with a strong incentive to flee.
He also highlighted a video recording in which Wontumi's own lawyer described him as unruly on television. This, Dr. Srem-Sai noted, further supports the claim that Wontumi could be a flight risk, as even his lawyer admitted that Wontumi could have endangered law enforcement officers during his arrest.
Dr. Srem-Sai urged the court to deny the bail request, suggesting that the risks of Wontumi absconding outweigh any arguments made by the defense regarding his past adherence to bail conditions. The court is scheduled to deliver its ruling on the bail application on November 4, 2026.
