Accra: Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, highlighted the profound influence of the centre-right ideology on Ghana's political and economic landscape, attributing it as a key driver in the nation's economic development. He described the Dombo-Busia tradition as a cornerstone in advocating for farmers' rights and contributing significantly to initiatives such as health insurance, free education, and rural industrialisation, thereby underlining its commitment to social justice and empowerment.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Afenyo-Markin delivered these insights during the inaugural lecture series of the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP) in Accra, themed 'The Centre Right Impact on Ghana's Political Landscape.' He pointed out that prominent figures, including past leaders, have been pivotal in promoting economic liberalisation, fostering private sector-led development, and advancing infrastructure. The New Patriotic Party (NPP), he noted, has been a leader in championing free-market economics, individual liberty, and limited government intervention.
Mr Afenyo-Markin, who also serves as the NPP Member of Parliament for Effutu, called on Ghanaians to reconnect with the tradition's foundational principles and to foster an empowered citizenry. He emphasised that the future of Ghana's centre-right legacy hinges on investments in education, health, skills development, and the establishment of robust institutions that support sustainable growth and widespread access to opportunities.
The Minority Leader further articulated that the centre-right ideology has been instrumental in driving economic liberalisation, spurring entrepreneurship and private sector expansion, and supporting infrastructure development to bolster economic performance. He also highlighted the critical role of fiscal responsibility in managing inflation and ensuring sustainable development.
Dr Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Chairman of the Council of Elders of the NPP and the Chairman of the event, praised the IERPP for launching the lecture series and stressed the importance of learning from historical precedents to further Ghana's developmental aspirations.
