Assin fosu: The Central North Regional Police Command concluded a three-day intensive capacity-building program for 80 security personnel in anticipation of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Primaries set for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
According to Ghana News Agency, a total of 214,812 delegates are expected to participate in the voting process across 277 centers nationwide, encompassing all 276 constituencies and the party's national headquarters. The NPP's Presidential Elections Committee has granted the Ghana Police Service sole responsibility for security arrangements, prohibiting any private or unauthorized security presence at the voting centers on election day.
In preparation, the Central North Police Command at Assin Fosu has mobilized 70 officers from seven police districts and 10 officers from the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for the high-risk tactical training. This program aims to bolster security coordination and foster a professional approach to election security in collaboration with GIS.
The training involved personnel from the Formed Police Unit and other operational teams, enhancing inter-agency coordination. Facilitated by seasoned security experts from the National Police Headquarters, participants underwent field-oriented security practicals and election-related security skills training. The training also covered tactical deployment and overall effectiveness in maintaining law and order during election duties and other security operations.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Abraham Acquaye, the Central North Regional Police Commander, expressed confidence in the program's ability to enhance personnel readiness and competence in addressing any security challenges. DCOP Acquaye emphasized that the course focused on public order management, border patrol duties, and other critical operational skills to ensure officers are adequately prepared for any challenges arising before, during, and after the polls.
DCOP Acquaye highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Police Administration's vision of establishing a highly professional, disciplined, and well-equipped police service capable of maintaining peace and public safety, especially during major national political events. He urged participating officers to apply the lessons learned and continuously hone their skills to ensure heightened efficiency and professionalism as the election period approaches.
He also cautioned political supporters to remain law-abiding and avoid actions that could disrupt the peace. "We the security agencies are well-equipped to deal with any eventuality, particularly troublemakers. The law is no respecter of persons, so no one will be shielded for any misbehavior," he advised.
