Accra: Carlos Queiroz has become the latest coach to return to the Black Stars dugout after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) reappointed him to lead the national team into the qualifiers of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The Portuguese coach's previous mandate ended just a few weeks ago following Ghana's participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, after discussions between the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and Queiroz, an agreement was reached for him to continue in charge, beginning with the next international window.
According to Ghana Web, Queiroz's return places him among a group of coaches who have previously left the Black Stars job before making a comeback. Among these are C.K. Gyamfi, who first led the Black Stars to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations titles between 1963 and 1965 and returned in 1982 to secure another title. Similarly, Fred Osam-Duodu had multiple tenures, leading Ghana to the AFCON title in 1978 and returning for various spells in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Sam Arday, another notable name, had two separate spells as head coach, first from 1996 to 1997 and then again in 2004. German coach Burkhard Ziese managed the team from 1990 to 1992 and returned in 2003, although his second stint was brief. Kwesi Appiah also returned after initially coaching from 2012 to 2014 and was reappointed in 2017.
Milovan Rajevac's first tenure saw Ghana reach the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup. He returned to the national team in 2021 to lead them in the Africa Cup of Nations. Otto Addo, the most recent before Queiroz, had two stints, the first in 2022 during the Qatar World Cup, and then from 2024 through the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.
Queiroz's initial mandate began in 2026, guiding the Black Stars at the World Cup. Despite his departure post-tournament, the GFA decided to bring him back for another phase, making him the latest in a line of coaches to leave and then return to the Black Stars.
