Cape Coast Teaching Hospital Launches Laparoscopic Surgical Training Programme with International Collaboration

Cape Coast:The Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), in partnership with the University of Utah, the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Ensign Global University, has initiated a laparoscopic surgical training programme. This initiative aims to enhance surgical expertise and healthcare delivery in Ghana by equipping healthcare professionals with modern minimally invasive techniques.

According to Ghana News Agency, the programme's focus is on promoting knowledge transfer, practical surgical training, research collaboration, and the adoption of innovative medical technologies within Ghana's healthcare system. Laparoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole surgery, is performed through small incisions with specialised instruments and cameras, resulting in less postoperative pain and faster recovery for patients.

Dr. Eric Kofi Ngyedu, CEO of CCTH, highlighted the importance of expanding access to modern surgical services and building the capacity of healthcare professionals. The hospital's investment in laparoscopic surgery is part of its broader mission to provide specialised healthcare services and establish itself as a centre of excellence in surgical training and healthcare delivery.

The CCTH has already introduced laparoscopic services, including training for surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and biomedical engineers, as well as acquiring simulation equipment to support continuous professional development. The new collaboration is expected to further these achievements by creating opportunities for advanced training and mentorship.

Professor Raymond R. Price from the University of Utah, involved in initiatives to expand access to quality surgical care, noted that the collaboration with CCTH would allow Ghanaian surgeons to benefit from international expertise and develop practical skills in minimally invasive procedures. The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons will contribute its expertise in postgraduate medical education, while Ensign Global University will provide support through its experience in global health education and research.

The programme emphasizes the importance of partnerships between local and international institutions in addressing gaps in specialised healthcare delivery, aiming to improve access to modern surgical procedures and reduce the burden of prolonged hospitalisation in the Central Region and beyond.
