Accra:Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has voiced his opinion that Emelia Afi Agbenyo should resign from her position as Deputy Chair of the Electoral Commission. He expressed these views during a panel discussion on Joy News.
According to Ghana Web, Kpebu argued that Agbenyo's appointment could exacerbate concerns about partisanship in the election management body. He strongly supported the call for her resignation, describing the appointment as unacceptable given the country's ongoing demand for a more independent Electoral Commission.
Kpebu emphasized the need for the commission to be free from political bias, stating, "I don't see how you can run an EC with very partisan people." He dismissed the notion that appointments should merely balance political interests, suggesting that the government could have selected independent candidates with robust professional backgrounds.
He concluded that choosing individuals with strong professional standing would likely enhance public confidence in the commission and reduce concerns about political influence.
