Accra: The Bible Society of Ghana (BSG) has embarked on a five-year initiative called the 'Clean and Green Earth Campaign,' urging Ghanaians to actively engage in environmental care.
According to Ghana News Agency, the project, themed 'Encouraging Local Action for Environmental Sustainability,' aims to foster community-driven environmental stewardship.
The BSG plans to implement this initiative nationwide, starting with the Ngleshie Alata and Kinka Traditional Areas in Accra. Key activities include beautifying the James Town Palace, initiating school gardening projects, distributing waste bins, and conducting large-scale clean-up efforts. The project will extend to 50 communities over five years, involving the training of 500 young people from 20 schools through environmental clubs.
Very Reverend Dr. John Kwesi Addo Jnr., General Secretary of the BSG, highlighted that the campaign aligns with a broader environmental agenda supported by the United Bible Societies' Creation Care programme. The campaign is designed to promote sustainable practices, community involvement in conservation, and a shift towards a cleaner and healthier environment. Dr. Addo Jnr. emphasized the importance of environmental care as a form of worship and an expression of love for neighbors and duty to the Creator.
The call for partnership extends to the Environmental Protection Authority, the Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, the Mayor of Accra, and the Government, stressing the need for collaborative efforts to enforce policies and support the project. Dr. Addo Jnr. encouraged community involvement and responsibility, urging residents to properly use waste bins and nurture planted trees, aiming to make James Town a sanitation model in Accra.
Mr. Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie, Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, emphasized the urgency of addressing poor sanitation, warning of severe environmental consequences if neglected. He called for a collective effort to tackle sanitation issues, highlighting the need for a comprehensive national plan and learning from global best practices to secure Ghana's future.
