Accra: Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged party members to put aside personal grudges, internal suspicions, and factional divisions that emerged during the flagbearer contest. He emphasized the need for reconciliation and forgiveness among members to advance the party's agenda following the presidential primary.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Bawumia made these remarks at the NPP Muslim thanksgiving service held at the Kanda National Mosque in Accra. The event was led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, and was attended by key party members. Dr Bawumia described the recent internal contest as a challenging election cycle that had the potential to create divisions and strain relationships within the party.
Dr Bawumia noted that elections could leave deep scars, citing personal experiences during the campaign where he faced insults and false allegations from fellow party members. He expressed his decision to refrain from responding to such attacks, relying on his faith and belief that the truth would prevail.
Despite satisfactory efforts to unite the party, Dr Bawumia acknowledged that the healing process was still ongoing. He highlighted the importance of addressing past grievances and working together towards common goals to achieve true unity. Dr Bawumia was declared the winner of the NPP presidential primary, securing 56.48 percent of the valid votes, and will lead the party in the 2028 general election. His competitors included Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
