Bawumia Reacts to Accra New Town Building Collapse

Accra: The former Vice President and flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his condolences to the families affected by the recent building collapse in Accra New Town. The incident, which involved a structure used as a place of Christian worship, has resulted in multiple casualties.

According to Ghana Web, Dr. Bawumia shared his sentiments on social media, expressing his sorrow over the tragic event. He extended his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and paid tribute to the emergency response teams for their prompt action. "I have received with sadness news of the tragic building collapse in Accra New Town this afternoon. May the lives lost painfully rest in peace, and my deepest sympathy goes to the families," he stated. He further commended the rescue teams for their efforts in saving lives.

The collapse occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, when an uncompleted four-storey structure near the Experimental D/A School gave way during a church gathering. The Ghana National Fire Service reported that 23 individuals were trapped in the debris. Rescue operations led to the successful evacuation of 20 people, who were immediately transported to nearby hospitals. Unfortunately, two females and one male succumbed to their injuries.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has advised students to avoid the site to ensure their safety.
