Accra: Former Minister of Tourism, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has expressed confidence in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's candidacy in the New Patriotic Party's presidential race. He emphasized that although all five candidates possess the potential to lead the party, Dr. Bawumia stands out due to his experience and appeal.
According to Ghana Web, Mercer highlighted on Metro TV that the contest transcends mere competence, focusing instead on who can best position the party for a successful run in the 2028 elections. Mercer noted that Dr. Bawumia, with his experience as Vice President of Ghana and as the party's flagbearer in the 2024 Election, holds a strategic edge over his rivals.
Mercer pointed out that senior party figures and former parliamentary candidates are increasingly supporting Dr. Bawumia's bid to lead the NPP in the upcoming general elections. He reported strong grassroots support for the former Vice President from party structures nationwide, predicting that Dr. Bawumia is likely to secure nearly 70% of the votes.
Leading over 100 former NPP parliamentary candidates from the 2024 Election in support of Dr. Bawumia, Mercer attributed the momentum to the candidate's accessibility and track record. He believes that such a decisive victory would solidify the party's position ahead of the 2028 elections by ensuring unity and leadership clarity.
