He noted that heads of basic schools are not just administrators but the moral compass of the nation's educational future, as they hold the power to implement classroom policies effectively. Despite facing challenges like inadequate resources and infrastructure, these leaders continue to work diligently to ensure the delivery of quality education.
Dr Ackorlie shared an anecdote about visiting a friend, a headteacher in a rural community in the Eastern Region. He found his friend working outside under a mango tree with an outdated laptop because his office was inaccessible, and the electricity was unstable. The friend's dedication underscored the resilience of many headteachers in Ghana who, despite obstacles, maintain the momentum of education by guiding teachers, supporting learners, and keeping schools operational.
He further asserted that empowering headteachers is essential for fostering a strong and transformational school environment. This empowerment involves continuous professional development, supportive supervisory structures, autonomy for innovation, fair allocation of resources, and recognition of exceptional achievements.
Dr Ackorlie challenged headteachers to be bold and learner-centered in their leadership, transforming schools into sanctuaries of hope and motivation. He urged them to ensure that every child feels seen and valued, emphasizing that they are not merely managing schools but shaping destinies.
Mr Maxwell Ayivor, the Volta Regional Vice Chairman of GNAT, conveyed a message emphasizing the theme of the conference: 'Empowering Heads, Enhancing Education Leadership for Quality Basic Education.' He reminded attendees of their shared mission and responsibility in shaping the path of basic education in the region. Ayivor reiterated GNAT's commitment to continuous collaboration and support, highlighting the significant impact of decisions made by educational leaders on students' futures.
Togbe Adzie Lakle Howusu XII, Awafiaga of Asogli State, who chaired the conference, advised fair treatment of children in disciplinary actions.
The two-day event also saw the Volta Region Chairman, Mr Stephen Vincent Gordor, presenting citations on behalf of Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Mr Kwame Governs Agbodza, Members of Parliament for Ho West, North Tongu, and Adaklu respectively, for their contributions to enhancing basic education in their constituencies.
