Bank of Ghana Urges Banks to Prioritize Cybersecurity Leadership

Accra:The Bank of Ghana has called on banks to elevate cybersecurity from a mere regulatory requirement to a central leadership responsibility involving boards and senior management.

According to Ghana Web, the BoG's Second Deputy Governor, Matilda Asante-Asiedu, emphasized the importance of integrating cyber resilience into leadership decisions as threats to the financial sector become increasingly complex.

The BoG has stressed the need for banks to strengthen industry cooperation and fully implement the Cyber and Information Security Directive (CISD) 2026. Asante-Asiedu highlighted the necessity of moving beyond compliance to make cyber resilience a core leadership priority, supported by effective collaboration and directive implementation.

This message was conveyed during a workshop organized by the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Association of Banks for board members and financial industry leaders. The event aimed to enhance cybersecurity governance and help bank leaders recognize their role in safeguarding financial institutions and customers from cyber threats. It is part of a broader industry effort to combat fraud and promote ethical practices.

Participants at the workshop also discussed the emerging cybersecurity challenges facing banks in Ghana. During a question-and-answer session, board members and industry leaders shared concerns and explored strategies for better protection against cyberattacks.

The BoG noted that cybersecurity responsibilities should extend beyond IT departments, with bank boards and senior managers also taking charge. The central bank urged banks to factor in cybersecurity when making crucial decisions related to operations, risk management, and customer protection.
