Accra: Mr Baba Jamal, who serves as Ghana's High Commissioner to Nigeria, emerged victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency. The election was noted for being closely contested and filled with tension throughout Saturday.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Jamal secured 431 votes out of the 964 votes cast, narrowly defeating his closest rival, Hajia Amina Adam, who obtained 399 votes. Other contestants included Mr Mohammed Ramne with 88 votes, Dr Yakubu Azindow with 45 votes, and Mr Najib Mohammed Sani who received one vote. The election took place at Centres A and B, where a high voter turnout was recorded, with 964 out of 1,039 registered voters participating.
The atmosphere at the voting centres remained charged throughout the day, with supporters of the candidates actively engaging in last-minute campaigning. In his victory speech, Mr Jamal expressed gratitude to God and the party leadership for the opportunity to serve. He described the two-week campaign as intensive and demanding on his family and campaign team.
Mr Jamal emphasized that the victory was a collective achievement for the NDC rather than a personal triumph, calling for unity following the internal contest. He commended his fellow contestants for their spirited campaigns, stating that the competition had fortified him for future challenges.
He extended an invitation to his opponents to join forces with him to secure victory for the NDC in the forthcoming general election, assuring them that his doors remained open. Mr Jamal also expressed appreciation to the media, Members of Parliament, party supporters, and constituents for their support, urging for unity to elevate the party's presence in Ayawaso East.
