Ayawaso East Residents Voice Concerns Over Vote Buying Ahead of By-Election

Accra: In recent years, the practice of vote buying has transitioned from an occasional irregularity to a systemic concern in Ghana. The growing monetisation of both internal party primaries and national elections is increasingly viewed as a 'new normal,' threatening to undermine the merit-based selection of leaders. According to Ghana Web, the most recent case of vote-buying occurred during the Ayawaso East constituency primaries, which saw Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed emerge as the winner and candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Though Baba Jamal was heavily criticised for allegedly engaging in vote buying, many argued that other candidates were equally culpable for the same, as they also offered money and other incentives to lure the electorate. Ahead of the Tuesday, March 3, 2026, by-elections, GhanaWeb visited residents of Ayawaso East to hear their views on the practice. While some questioned why anyone would want to buy votes when their capabilities should speak for themselves, others s tressed that what they need is development, not money. Other residents also called for an end to vote buying altogether.
