Ayariga Defends Economic Policies as Forson Abolishes MoMo Taxes

Accra: Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has defended the government's economic management, arguing that the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review shows a different approach from the previous administration under former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. Addressing Parliament on Thursday, Ayariga contrasted the policies of Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, with those of his predecessor. According to Ghana Web, Ayariga highlighted a significant shift in fiscal policies, noting that Ofori-Atta had imposed taxes on mobile money transfers, which Dr. Forson has since abolished. He emphasized that despite the removal of these taxes, the current Finance Minister has been able to manage the economy effectively without resorting to reckless borrowing. Ayariga praised Dr. Forson's economic stewardship, stating that the government's policies have helped stabilize the economy while alleviating the tax burden on Ghanaians. He also pointed out the current administration's focus on strategic investments, contrast ing it with the spending priorities of the previous government. He remarked on the emphasis on infrastructure, particularly in education and transportation, as indicative of the government's commitment to national development. Ayariga noted that the Mid-Year Budget Review showcases increased funding for educational infrastructure, enhancements to existing schools, and substantial road projects throughout the country, as opposed to initiatives like the National Cathedral under the previous administration.
