Atiwa East Breast Cancer Screening Initiative Refers Five Women for Mammograms

Accra:Atiwa East A total of 870 women have been screened for breast cancer in four communities within the Atiwa East Constituency during the first three days of the 2026 Obaatanpa Free Breast Cancer Screening Programme. As a result, five women have been referred for mammograms for further medical assessment.

According to Ghana Web, the initiative is spearheaded by Abena Osei-Asare, the Atiwa East Member of Parliament and Chairperson of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee. The programme aims to improve access to preventive healthcare for women and has so far covered Adasawase, Asamang Tamfoe, Moseaso, and Anyinam.

The MP expressed satisfaction with the progress of the programme in a Facebook post, highlighting the successful screening of 870 women and encouraging more to participate as the programme moves to additional communities. She stressed that early detection and timely medical attention are crucial in promoting women's health.

The referrals for mammograms are intended to facilitate further investigation where necessary. It is important to note that a referral does not imply a breast cancer diagnosis but rather serves as a precautionary step for additional assessment.

Osei-Asare also acknowledged the efforts of the party's Women's Wing and nurses from Enyiresi Government Hospital, commending their professionalism and dedication. She emphasized the significance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer, urging more women in Atiwa East to engage in the screening initiative.

With the programme's initial success in screening 870 women, the 2026 Obaatanpa initiative seeks to continue its outreach, dependent on community participation and appropriate follow-up for those referred for further medical evaluation.
