Atebubu: Maize farmers in the Atebubu/Amantin Municipality have expressed worry about the depreciation price of maize, and called for government intervention.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Dickson Williams Agyei, the Chairman of the Atebubu Area Farmers Association, reported a sharp decline in the market price of maize. The price of a bag of maize has reduced significantly from GHC1,200 to GHC400 in the area.
Mr. Agyei spoke at the new year meeting of the association held in Atebubu, expressing concern that the reduction in maize prices has plunged many farmers into debt. He highlighted that farmers are now finding it difficult to cover production costs, with some considering halting maize cultivation to mitigate further financial losses.
He warned that if the pricing issue is not addressed promptly, the maize production sector in the area could collapse, potentially leading to food insufficiency and hunger, as many households depend heavily on maize.
Mr. Agyei urged the government to provide support, such as input costs and seedlings, to help farmers revive their farms and remain operational. He also called on the government to explore export opportunities for the farmers.
