Kumasi: Asante Kotoko are in the round of 16 of the MTN FA Cup after beating Kumasi-based division two side, Acceler8z FC 2:0 in their round of 32 encounter at the Baba Yara Stadium. Two goals from Kwame Poku and Henry Ansu in either half were all the Porcupine Warriors needed to secure a place in the next stage of the competition. According to Ghana News Agency, as nine-time champions and a premier league side, many fans expected Kotoko to dominate their opponents, but they needed additional time to conclude the match, which was filled with suspense. Despite taking the lead in the 42nd minute, Kotoko found it challenging to put the game beyond a team striving for recognition, leaving their fans anxious for most of the match until Ansu sealed the win six minutes into injury time. The initial minutes of the match did not reflect the gap between a premier league side and a second-tier team, as both teams showcased their attacking intents. Despite taking control of the game after the 10th minute, the Porcupine s were not as sharp as their opponents, who appeared more threatening with their forward movements. Coach Prosper Nartey Ogum made seven changes to his team that played against Medeama in Takwa last week, introducing young goalkeeper Fatao Seidu for his season debut with the club. As the match progressed into the 20th minute, Acceler8z FC grew in confidence, with Kotoko having little to show for their dominance. They created a couple of tense moments in Kotoko's goal area and were unfortunate not to have scored at some point. However, it was Asante Kotoko who took the lead from a penalty after Saaka Dauda was fouled in the box. A long pass from Joseph Abloh saw Dauda outmaneuvering his marker to control the ball, and as he made his way into the box, he collided with Acceler8z FC's onrushing goalkeeper, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Kwame Poku successfully converted the penalty, marking his third goal in three matches since rejoining the club in the second transfer window. Despite a spirited fig htback from the lower-tier side, the results remained unchanged as Kotoko went into the break with a slender lead. The second half saw Kotoko determined to secure victory with a second goal, as they launched attacks with Kwame Poku at the forefront. Acceler8z FC, playing as the home team, found their rhythm after the initial 10 minutes, challenging Kotoko with an improved performance. They maintained their composure as underdogs but proved to be formidable opponents for the premier league giants seeking their 10th trophy in the competition. Having kept Kotoko at bay for 45 minutes in the second half, Acceler8z FC took risks in the additional eight minutes, pressing for an equalizer. However, it was Kotoko who capitalized on the extended time, scoring their second goal through Henry Ansu to advance to the next stage of the competition.
