Accra: A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has alleged that former President Nana Akufo-Addo did not fulfill a promise made to former Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe shared these insights during an exclusive interview with Etsey Atisu on The Lowdown. He recounted the events of the party's 2008 presidential primaries, highlighting that the congress began at Legon on a Friday and extended to Sunday without a leader being chosen, as Akufo-Addo could not secure the required 50 plus one majority despite having the highest figures.
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe revealed that Kyerematen, who was a contender, agreed to step aside after persuasion, thus paving the way for Akufo-Addo to become the party's flagbearer. He alleged that Akufo-Addo had promised to support Kyerematen's future presidential aspirations, a promise that was not kept. In his view, Akufo-Addo should have endorsed Kyerematen's ambitions when he was about to leave office.
Despite the unfulfilled promise, Kyerematen reportedly remained calm about the situation. Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe suggested that Kyerematen should have reconsidered his political trajectory. He also mentioned the internal party dynamics during subsequent elections, noting the rise of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the manoeuvring that occurred, which ultimately led to Kyerematen not being selected as the flagbearer. Nevertheless, Kyerematen was among the initial members of the cabinet when the government was formed.
