Accra: The Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Ben Boakye, has called for accountability over the AKSA power plant contract. He made the comments on TV3's The Key Points on Saturday, August 15, 2026, while discussing the conviction of former Goldman Sachs banker and former Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Managing Director, Kwaku Asante Berko. Asante Berko was convicted by a federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, over a bribery scheme linked to the development and financing of the AKSA power plant in Ghana.
According to Ghana Web, Boakye stated that government officials involved in the approval of the deal should be held responsible for what went wrong. He emphasized that proper due diligence was not conducted before the contract was approved. "We can hold those who contracted the power deal accountable for everything that has gone wrong," he asserted. Boakye highlighted that a review of the deal revealed discrepancies in the figures, which did not justify the contract's value. He noted that investment figures were significantly lower than expected, yet the contract was valued at $720 million, which he described as nonsensical.
Boakye further criticized Parliament for its failure to adequately scrutinize the agreement before giving its approval. "Parliament failed to do due diligence," he stated, underscoring the need for thorough examination and transparency in such significant deals.
