Obuasi: AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, with support from its partners, has inspired female students at the Asare Bediako Senior High School (SHS) to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The partners included the Women in Engineering of the Ghana Institution of Engineers (WINE-GhIE), Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), and SGS.
According to Ghana News Agency, the session, themed 'From vision to impact: redefining STEM by closing the gender gap,' was part of the activities marking the 2026 International Day for Women and Girls in Science. The initiative aimed to encourage young girls to develop an interest in STEM disciplines and expose them to diverse career opportunities within these fields.
The event featured accomplished industry professionals and mentors, many of whom are practitioners at the Obuasi Mine. They shared personal stories about their academic journeys, workplace experiences, and the resilience required to succeed in male-dominated industries. Through candid discussions and practical insights, the speakers challenged the students to overcome stereotypes, embrace innovation, and confidently pursue careers in science and engineering.
Nana Yaw Nti Owusu-Adanse, the Engineering Manager of the Process Plant at AGA Obuasi Mine, urged the students to take advantage of STEM education and strive for excellence. He highlighted the vast and transformative opportunities available in STEM and advised the students to prepare themselves, build competence, and compete confidently alongside their male counterparts.
He reaffirmed the Mine's commitment to achieving 50 percent female representation by 2030, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and leadership development in building a strong pipeline of female professionals within the mining industry and beyond. A key highlight of the program was the official launch of the Mentorship Programme for Girls in Science at Asare Bediako SHS, designed to provide structured guidance, career exposure, and professional support to female students pursuing STEM-related subjects.
The engagement underscores AGA Obuasi Mine's commitment to sustainable development and community investment, particularly in education and gender inclusion.
