Accra: Mr John K. Essel, the Pro-Chancellor and Founder of Knutsford University, has called on African nations to prioritize innovation, integration, and sustainability to ensure a prosperous future for the continent.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Essel highlighted that Africa's demographic potential would only lead to development through deeper unity and coordinated action.
During the university's 18th Matriculation and 15th Congregation ceremony in Accra, Mr Essel reiterated the vision of former President Kwame Nkrumah for a 'United Kingdoms of Africa.' This concept emphasizes a federation that honors cultural identities while fostering stronger political and economic cooperation. He noted the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area, but stressed that successful integration demands harmonized standards, robust digital infrastructure, and coordinated industrial strategies.
Mr Essel also emphasized the importance of Pan-African academic collaboration through student exchanges, joint degrees, research partnerships, and multidisciplinary training. He echoed President John Dramani Mahama's call for Africa to have permanent representation on the UN Security Council, asserting that the continent should engage as partners rather than aid recipients.
Highlighting the role of innovation, Mr Essel urged investment in STEAM education, digital governance, and technology entrepreneurship as pathways to independence. He warned that without sustainable management, Africa's rich resources could become a burden rather than a blessing.
Mr Yaw Sakyi-Danso, representing President Mahama, commended Knutsford University for its dedication to Africa-centered development. He encouraged students to seize opportunities and contribute to shaping Africa's destiny.
In his annual report, Vice-Chancellor Professor Anthony K. Ahiawodzi noted that the dual ceremony marked the start of academic life for new students and the graduation of the 2024/2025 cohort. This year's graduation was the first under the university's new Presidential Charter granted in December 2024.
Professor Ahiawodzi reported that 761 new students matriculated, while 286 graduates received certificates in various disciplines. He highlighted institutional advancements, including the integration of PerTutor AI and the introduction of 24 new academic programs. Knutsford University was also recognized as the Best Private Tertiary Education Institution of the Year 2025.
Challenges such as low student numbers and tuition arrears were acknowledged, with an appeal for support from corporate bodies and philanthropists for scholarships and infrastructure development. The ceremony also included the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Laws on Bishop Douglas Akuamoah Boateng, the Chancellor of the University.
