Afenyo-Markin Warns of Generation Loss to Drug Abuse in Ghana

Accra:Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has issued a stern warning that Ghana faces the risk of losing an entire generation of young people to drug abuse unless urgent measures are implemented to combat the escalating threat posed by narcotics trafficking.

According to Ghana Web, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the dangers posed by the proliferation of illicit drugs, which not only threaten the health and future of the nation's youth but also wreak havoc on families and undermine national productivity. He emphasized that the consequences of drug trafficking extend beyond national security concerns and Ghana's international reputation, necessitating attention to its impact on local communities.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of Parliament's resumption on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Afenyo-Markin stressed the importance of addressing the issue at the community level rather than solely focusing on international drug interceptions. He urged that the fight against drug trafficking should be a national responsibility, with institutions tasked with public protection held accountable for their performance.

Afenyo-Markin also called for parliamentary scrutiny of institutional and regulatory weaknesses that might have facilitated drug trafficking. He proposed a parliamentary inquiry to assess the performance of public institutions and identify deficiencies in the country's drug enforcement systems, clarifying that this would not interfere with ongoing criminal investigations or court proceedings.

His remarks come amidst increasing concerns over Ghana's connections to significant international narcotics seizures, including the recent interception of approximately 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at the Port of Dunkirk in France.
