Accra: Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has firmly rejected personal attacks and allegations tied to his scrutiny of the Bank of Ghana's Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). Afenyo-Markin asserts that these attacks are attempts to divert attention from the reported financial losses associated with the programme.
According to Ghana Web, Afenyo-Markin issued a statement on August 23, 2026, categorically denying the allegations against him, labeling them as entirely false. He emphasized his commitment to Parliament's constitutional oversight role, stating that his actions are guided by this responsibility.
Afenyo-Markin plans to continue collaborating with the Minority Caucus to initiate parliamentary processes for a comprehensive inquiry into the reported GHS22 billion loss linked to GoldBod's trading activities, which have been reflected in the Bank of Ghana's records. He referenced an International Monetary Fund report indicating that the loss under the programme was approximately US$1.7 billion in 2025. Afenyo-Markin insists that Ghanaians have the right to understand how public funds were managed, regardless of which institution's balance sheet the loss appears on.
He is demanding transparency regarding the beneficiaries of the transactions, the discounts applied to gold purchases, and the authority behind those discount approvals. Afenyo-Markin also seeks a detailed breakdown of the reported US$1.7 billion loss to identify its specific sources. He emphasizes the importance of these questions being part of the public record.
